Mediterranean History and Culture
This article will serve to show a synopsis of the history and culture
of the Mediterranean region however, we must first identify the region relative to its geography. The
Mediterranean is the region identified by the Mediterranean Sea and the lands which border the sea; Europe to
the north, North Africa to the south and Asia to the west.
The history of the region is on one hand entrenched in war and violence but on the other trade and the
development of modern societies. Trading in the region became prominent around 2000 BC between the Egyptians, the
Phoenicians(Syria and Palestine) and the Greeks. These civilizations not only traded but they also created colonies
throughout the region, spreading their cultures. However with expansion came the creation of empires and the wars
closely followed. Most notable was the emergence of the Roman Empire which was known to be unforgiving towards
their enemies. Under the guidance of Julius Caesar the empire expanded all throughout the region fighting wars
against Germanic, North African, Spanish and French tribes and even against England. These war were bloody but were
a necessity to control not only the people but more importantly the lands and hence the wealth that came with the
capture of each. In the later stages of the rule by the Romans there was the emergences of the Arab tribes,
fueled by their Religion, became worthy advisories and eventually a major power in the region with the fall of the
Roman Empire around the 6th century AD. Over time, with the movement and development of different tribes, the
region has morphed into what it is today with countries such as France, Spain, Turkey, Italy Egypt and Morocco to
name a few. These countries along with many others within the region help to create a very diverse blend of
culture.
The culture of countries, within the region, can be generally classified in terms of religious beliefs.
The most common religions of the Mediterranean are Christianity and Islam. Christianity resonates primarily in
countries to the north of the Mediterranean Sea while primarily Islam to the south. This glaring difference creates
a very unique contrast of culture with a relatively small region. Another unique trait of the region’s culture is
its cuisine which is characterized by its variety, flexibility and the range of ingredients. Seafood is very common
in Mediterranean dishes, but has seen a decline over the years as the fish population in the Mediterranean Sea
continues to dwindle. Goats and Sheep meat, Pita Bread and Hummus are also very common especially in the south of
the region. The use of olive oil and Garlic is common; most famously in Italian and French cuisine. With a very
noted history and rich and unique culture, the Mediterranean region is very delightful blend of diversity, great
food and fine art.
One of the best ways to experience the rich culture of the region is by taking a Mediterranean cruise. The
western Mediterranean cruise will allow one to experience the beauty, cuisine and history of regions such as Italy,
France, Morocco, Portugal and Spain while an eastern cruise will take you to regions such as Turkey, Greece,
Ukraine and Bulgaria. Specialty cruise also allows you to experience such countries as Egypt and Israel or the
Greek Isles. The experience of a Mediterranean cruise is surely one of a lifetime!
