 Mediterranean Currency

Mediterranean CurrencyDue to the many different countries, within the region, that are visited by cruise liners, the problem of currency could be problematic to unprepared travellers. Although each county has their own local currency the widely accepted currencies throughout the region are the US Dollar, British Pound Sterling and the Euro.

The more popular of the three is the Euro, the official currency of the Eurozone; a group of 17 members of the European Union. Such countries include France, Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Malta and Italy; all of which are popular stops for Mediterranean cruises. The Euro was implemented with the main goal of creating a strong and stable European economy and was launched on January 1, 1999 with circulation commencing in 2002. After a few sub-par years of growth, the value of the euro has increased rapidly reaching heights of $1.43 and £1.24 in 2010. Not only has the value of the euro increased vastly so too has its international usage making it not only popular within Europe and the Mediterranean but also the world.

Although the popularity and use of the Euro has vastly increased, the most popular currency throughout the world has continued to be the United States dollar as it allows travellers the flexibility and the assurance that in spite of wherever there are chances that the US dollar will be accepted. The US dollar is also very popular and widely accepted throughout the Mediterranean and onboard cruise vessels. Over recent years the dollar has slipped in value against the Euro and Pound Sterling but that has not affected the popularity of the dollar for cruise ship passengers sailing the Mediterranean and as such is a smart choice of currency to travel with.

The British Pound Sterling, though not as popular throughout the region and the Euro or the US dollar, is still accepted within some areas of the Mediterranean. It would be a very useful currency to have if for instance one’s cruise stops in the United Kingdom.

Whichever currency one chooses to travel with chances are there are places onboard the cruise liner which can exchange to local currency if one desires. It is useful to note that the local currency of some of the countries of The Mediterranean region might not be exchangeable in some countries, therefore it might be best served to only convert to local currency the amount that is needed as to prevent the problem of going home with a substantial amount of currency that might not be easily exchanged.
